Now here is something very very special! You really don’t see these come up often! All the way from 1967 – it is a Fender Coronado II hollow body guitar! First released in 1966 and designed by the famous Roger Rossmeisl who used to come up with guitars for Rickenbacker before he was invited to join Fender, these guitars were Fender’s answer to Gibson ES330 and Epiphone Casino hollow bodies that were becoming very popular back in the 1960s. This was also the very first non-solid body electric guitar Fender ever released. Fender went all-in for these top-spec models – and we applaud them for the courage of thinking outside the box instead of resting on the laurels of Strats and Teles. Even after CBS takeover in 1965 Fender company kept innovating and experimenting. Fender also released Coronado bass guitars. The production officially started in 1966 and ended in 1972. Most Coronados came with a simple trapeze stop-tail, vibrato units were available as an option. Guitar for sale has beautiful patina and checking of the nitrocellulose finish and aged cream binding of the body. No nasty cracks or repairs, no refinishing business, just 50 years of finish wear that needs to be seen to be believed. Fender called this finish “Cherry Red” and it reminds us of the classic Gibson ES colour, transparent in the middle so you can see the wood grain. However, Fender’s unique twist was to add Candy Apple Red burst on the sides and around the F-holes. Very unusual and uber-cool! The body is fully hollow, has arched top and back and is made out of maple, which gives it a very nice acoustic projection and clarity of tone. Elongated F-holes are a prominent feature, as well as the “floating” Gibsonesque pickguard. The headstock is an interpretation of a Strat design, but has more rounded edges, Fender used the same design on acoustic guitars they made in the 1960s. The neck has a very pretty fretboard binding that has aged into a cream colour and pearl block inlays with 3D depth effect. Fender/Schaller F-style tuners still work smoothly and provide decent tuning stability. Rounded fretboard binding and the overall thickness and shape of the neck make it very comfortable to play. Original frets are low, but even, the truss-rod is fully functional and has room for adjustment both ways. Back of the neck has cool worn finish, that feels like satin and a hundred gigs. Gorgeous finished headstock with the big logo completes the vintage look. Unique features continue with the electronics. Fender specially ordered the pickups from a famous US company DeArmond to appeal to all those Gretsch fans. Despite the size and cover design these are true single-coils and they come with individually adjustable magnets, that allow you to tailor each string response to your needs. Compared to the P90s Gibson used in their ES330, these provide more clarity. Electronics loom came fully assembled from Rowe Industries (Toledo, Ohio) and consists of two volume and two tone pots as well as a 3-way toggle switch. The wiring on our guitar is all original, tone controls can be a bit scratchy sometimes, but the treble roll-off is still beautiful and provides a lot of useful tones. Trapeze tailpiece is original to the guitar, but the flimsy Jazzmaster style bridge has been changed at some point. Rosewood bridge is stable, has thumb-screws for precise height adjustment on both sides and provides very accurate intonation across the fretboard thanks to the compensated design of the saddles. The guitar for sale comes in fully original unmodified condition with the exception of the bridge, the toggle switch tip and the nut and Hiscox UK hardcase. Hardcase provides very nice protection, has red plush interior and keys for the locks. It also has loops for a strap so you can wear it on your back. Whether you are a seasoned Fender collector or a passionate guitar player looking for something different, this just might be it: rare, unique, very playable and surprisingly versatile. This instrument received a full professional setup with deep body cleaning, body polish, neck deep clean, lemon oil fretboard treatment, full electronics check, truss-rod and action and intonation adjustment. 24h courier service provided to UK customers. Please note that although we put our heart and soul and also all our knowledge into every single guitar we sell, a setup is a personal preference and we cannot give any guarantees. However, we try to get the best playability out of every guitar and set them up so you can play both rhythm and lead. We also pull them all apart to clean and check every single component and replace all unreliable parts with new ones, from dodgy pots to the whole wiring, tuners, string trees, nuts and etc. All the work done is described in detail in the listing. We make sure that every guitar we sell is problem-free and take full responsibility for the accuracy of our listing descriptions. All photographs are done by a professional photographer and processed on a calibrated monitor. Some colours might look slightly different on your monitor, but we will always put the official Fender colour name in the listing description, so please study pictures of other guitars with the same colour if you are unsure. We focus on finding great quality guitars and making them reliable and inspiring to play.
